As an engineer, by both degree and mindset, I know that the phrase, Trial and Error, is a misnomer. There are no errors. What happens is what is supposed to happen. There are, however, less than satisfactory outcomes, prompting me to use the phrase, Trial and Outcome.
The 4-D Development Process is engineering applied to speaking.
Define: 5Ws & an H (Who, What, When, Where, Why & How) Design: Create the program which satisfies that Defined Deliver: Give it your best shot... Thank you very much! Debrief: What worked best? What do they want more of? What could be added to make it better?
Success flows from making every program a little better than the last. In my experience, speakers fall short of their talent by coasting through one of these four, mainly the debriefing stage.
Encouragement: Take time soon after each program to list what you did well, what could be better, what could be expanded, what could be added to improve your speaking. Keep becoming a bit better each. |
