When a topic is wrong for your audience you are wasting time... theirs and yours.
As Air Force technical instructor teaching electronics technology in the fifties, my audience was given. As an Internet technology seminar leader in the nineties, the same was true. Today I speak about speaking and living wherever I am asked, whenever I can. Mainly I am improving this website and adding to my YouTube channel for those who are interested. Whenever someone asks me to speak to their group I gather the details, agree on the topic, then ask them to complete this sentence stem: When you finish I want the audience to be thinking and feeling... Getting the meeting organizer to identify the program goal, I can design a program which will serve both their needs and wants, the former filling the content portion of a program and the latter, the enjoyment.
Speaking Success: The best speakers design and deliver programs on audience appropriate topics to fit both the setting and situation.
Caution: The only thing worse than not being asked to speak to a group is agreeing to speak on the wrong topic to the wrong group. Agony! |
